Swamp Gravy Performance Benefits Hospice

6/20/2012

Hospice of South Georgia's Advisory board is sponsoring a production of Swamp Gravy on August 4th at 7:30pm at the VHS Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $25.00 a person and can be purchased at Commercial Banking Company, Bennett Law Firm, Davis Electric, Valdosta Insurance and Guardian Bank.  All proceeds are to benefit Hospice of South Georgia & Langdale Hospice House.

The true flavor of the South comes in a slice of life, by "Swamp Gravy," Georgia’s sensational folk life play. The 1994 and 1995 Regional Designation Award winner of the Cultural Olympiad, Swamp Gravy gleans the comedy and tragedy of daily life from family stories, tall tales and folk lore from southwest Georgia. It celebrates the culture that is uniquely rural Georgia.

Like its namesake, swamp gravy, the play is a delectable concoction stirred up from whatever is on hand. The region’s history, folklore and talent create a tantalizing performance treat. Based on true stories, Swamp Gravy transforms Southern life into unforgettable, family theatre.

The stories told in Swamp Gravy help animate the region’s heritage by preserving the knowledge of the past in a stunning production that combines drama, song, dance and spectacle. Since 1991 Swamp Gravy has performed for 100,000 people, including the Olympic Games in Atlanta and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. with new stories and vignettes added each year.
